For example, multiple runs of a single application on an HPC system can result in runtimes that vary by an order of magnitude or more. Such variations may be caused by any combination of factors from the input data set or nondeterministic algorithms to the interconnect fabric, operating system, and hardware. System variability increases with scale and complexity, and it is known to limit both performance and energy efficiency in large-scale systems. The goal of this BoF is to bring together researchers across HPC communities to share and identify challenges in variability.
